Partisanship and Survey Refusal

Survey refusal in the Current Population (CPS) has tripled over last decade. This rise coincides with emergence of rhetoric, largely from political right, questioning accuracy and integrity government statistics. We examine how support for Tea Party Republican party have affected CPS rates whether households are more likely to participate survey when their preferred holds White House. Using state metro vote shares or an individual-level model based on longitudinal structure CPS, we find no evidence that supporters drive long-term upward trend refusals. do a cycle response rates. Refusal since 2015 exhibit polarization, fastest growth refusals among those least Trump Party. Evidence analysis which generates exogenous variation using rain day first rally indicates exposure anti-survey rhetoric decreases rates, consistent findings our other analyses.
